Tyre’s for your caravan and motorhome can be costly to replace, so maintaining them and giving them proper care can help expand their lifespan. When was the last time you checked your tyres?
If your tyres are due a bit of TLC – just keep reading for some tips on how to look after them.
Check the tread wear regularly
As you would with your car, checking the tread of your tyres is highly important. The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread breadth. If you have major treadwear during a normal life span of a tyre, this could indicate a serious issue. This could be incorrect loading, wrong inflation pressure or poor alignment of your wheels.
If your tyres are overloaded and operated in this condition, they may show uneven wear across the tread. That’s why it’s important to keep checking your tyres, to make sure you are not overloading your vehicle.
Check your tyre pressure
The pressure of your tyres can have a massive impact on their lifespan. If your tyres are underinflated or overinflated, this can have a knock-on effect onto your handling and can lead to your tyres deteriorating and wearing quicker than usual – which results in a costly replacement or repair.
Check your manufacturer's handbook to see what the tyre pressure for your vehicle should be.
Thanks to lockdown, a lot of our vehicles have been parked up for quite some time. a good idea to give your tyres a check over to look for any visible chips, stones, foreign objects that shouldn’t be in them.
We also recommend occasionally turning your tyres when it’s parked up in storage, as this will help to prevent from any flat spots occurring.
As we reach winter, you could consider replacing your wheels with stands that are referred to as winter wheels. Check with your insurer before doing this, however, as it could potentially void your policy depending on your insurer.
Keeping up-to-date regular checks of your tyres will do you the world of good when it comes to costly repairs and replacements – replacing an expensive tyre is hardly a dream scenario.
