How to Put on a Caravan A-Frame Cover

It doesn’t take a genius to realise how important keeping your Caravan in good working order is. Part of that is making sure your Caravan’s hardware is kept clean and in good condition so you can avoid unnecessary repairs or replacements.

Now, unless you’re planning on holidaying on your front drive or a storage site, it could be argued the tow hitch is one of the most important parts of your Caravan. Without it, you’re stuck. So, it only makes sense to protect your Tow Hitch from the elements.

The easiest way to do this is to cover your tow hitch with a Caravan A-Frame cover when not in transit. This will protect the tow hitch from the elements, preventing dirt and grime from accumulating on the important hardware, and even reducing the chance of rust forming. Covering your a-Frame also gives you the added bonus of not having to clean it when it comes time to hitch up.

So now you know the pros of having a tow hitch cover, let’s go over the process of buying the right one for your caravan, and getting one fitted.

A-Frame Size

Most caravans all have an A-Frame of a very similar size; however, on occasion, they can vary, so it is always best to double-check. If you’re buying your Tow Hitch cover online, be sure to check the product dimensions and compare these to your own caravan A-Frame. The best way to do this is to get a tape measure and measure from the furthest point of your A-Frame to your caravan body.

If you are a bit unsure, you can always ask your dealer or who you purchased your caravan from – they should be able to point you in the right direction. Most dealers also sell vinyl a-frame covers, so you could pick one up from them (be aware – these won’t be breathable. For more information on why this might be important, read our blog on breathability vs waterproof here)

Clean It

It makes zero sense to put a cover on a dirty caravan. All of the rain and dirt can run down your caravan front and collect on top of the A-frame, and if any leaves have been left to rot on the caravan – you may find the Tow Hitch to be a lot dirtier than you would imagine.

It is best to give it a good clean, ensuring any cracks are given a thorough wipe down. You can always clean it with a power wash on a low setting or using your favourite caravan cleaner.

Fit The Cover

Make sure your tow hitch is locked and your caravan is in position before you start.

  1. Take out your A-Frame cover and make sure it is positioned the right way.
  2. Unclip all of the buckles and straps that are on the cover.
  3. Place the cover over your Tow Hitch, making us it is lined up correctly.
  4. Check nothing is caught in any of the straps before securing them underneath the A-Frame.
  5. Tighten the straps as you see fit.
  6. If needed, trim any excess binding on the straps and seal with a lighter or match to prevent it from fraying.
